Cormorants – recording what we see

Jun 2026

General

Cormorants are a familiar sight on the Roe, and understanding their presence on our waters is increasingly important.

Roe Angling Club would like to highlight the Hydroscape reporting tool, which allows anglers to log sightings quickly with a location, count and photo. Each record contributes to a wider dataset, helping build a clear, evidence-based picture of cormorant activity across our rivers.

In Northern Ireland, cormorants are a protected species and any management is overseen by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA), with decisions based on evidence of impact.

While this tool doesn’t replace official processes, it provides a useful, structured way of recording what anglers are already seeing on the bank - helping move from general observation to reliable information.

Members may wish to take note and make use of it when out on the water.
